Carnarvon Gorge

A great nights sleep amongst the eucalyptus bush and Dad had birthday wishes and kisses bright and early. We whipped out to see if we could spot the elusive platypus during its morning feed (and the birthday boy saw two!). At 10 am we set off up Carnarvon Gorge, a massive rock canyon formed from ancient volcanic activity and years of erosion. The main track follows the creek up the gorge and there are several side-tracks which take you up to some hidden wonderlands. First off-shoot took us to the Ampitheatre, a steep (ladder) climb up a rock face and into a small crack in the rock which opened up to a magnificent cavern. The echos were great and 'Happy birthday' sounded pretty cool reverberating around the rocks. From here we carried on up the Gorge for our next detour - the Art Gallery. Carnarvon has special spiritual and cultural significance for the Aboriginees (even though its named after a hill in Wales!) and they left a series of prints and rock carvings in rock overhangs throughout the gorge. The Art Gallery had several of these on display and was well worth the scramble up the hill. On the way back we visited Wards Canyon, a beaut wee spot high in the rocky gorge, where Ed choked on his piece of chocolate and we saw some dinosaur food (giant tree ferns thousands of years old, dinosaur fossils have been found in the Gorge). Back down the Gorge we came to the last side track which took us up to the green as green Moss Gardens with water falls and springs coming out of the rock face. Wow, we were walking for 5 1/2 hours (14.7 kms) with really no complaints from the kids and we all gave ourselves a much desrved pat on the back when we got back to rescue Pearl. Ed sorted the party hats, Rosa the nibbles and Tom the drinks and we sat down to celebrate Dads birthday in style - a candlelit roast dinner with hot apple crumble and custard in the bush. For extra desert we headed for the campfire to roast marshmellows under the stars! Perfect!

  1. Happy Birthday Ben - a bit late since it is the 14th here today. You all look like you are having a blast and exploring some wonderful sites. Made us think maybe we should do a blog! What a wonderful time you look like you are having and Pearl seems to be just the right size for you all. Have fun as you continue your journey. We are off on Saturday to Rhodes to just lie in the sun so will read your blog this week and then catch up on the 27th. xoxo
