Sugar cane & Platypus at Eungella

We are definitely in the tropics with more humid weather and its quite a bit hotter when the suns out. Most of the land around us is farmed in sugar cane. In between the towering canes there is the odd beef cattle or dairy farm but sugar seems to be the main crop in this area. We were keen to learn more about the production of sugar so this morning we went on a tour of a mini replica sugar mill. It was very interesting and we watched the production of some sugar syrup from the canes. As well as all the different sugars (icing, brown, raw, white etc) there are other important by-products produced such as molasses and dunder (fertiliser). The plant we were at distilled alcohol from the molasses to produce a range of spirits. After tasting a few of these plus a huge helping of candy floss we headed for the hills in search of the elusive platypus. We drove past several sugar cane farms in various stages of harvest as well as 3 large sugar mills with train loads of cane ready to be processed. Enroute Pearl clocked in 2000 km, our distance travelled since we left Brisbane about 10 days ago. After an hour or so we came to Eungella National Park where we set up camp in a magnificent spot overlooking the valley we had just driven through. On dusk we headed up the road to a river known for platypus sightings. It didn't take long to see our first platypus, who was a bit far away to see clearly, but then we saw quite a few up close swimming on the surface of the water before diving to the bottom to feed. See if you can see him........
